2017 Kia Rio

The Kia Rio Is Compact, Affordable, and Versatile

Every automaker seems to offer their own compact vehicle, and even so, the Kia Rio remains the top choice for Shelby drivers. The Rio is available as either a sedan or a hatchback, helping it appeal to a wider range of drivers. This way, you can choose whether you prefer the traditional styling of a sedan or the cargo versatility of a hatchback. Whether you choose the sedan or hatchback, you will be getting virtually identical models with the exception of body style. The Rio remains the most affordable model in the Kia lineup, making it perfect for those who want to own their first car or just don't want to be paying off an auto loan for too long.  Even with its budget-friendly nature, the Kia Rio offers plenty to love, including two trims for the sedan and three for the hatchback known as the Rio 5-Door. This means that you can enjoy higher-end features without breaking the bank, including things like navigation featuring voice commands and a power sunroof. With an Active Eco System, the Rio delivers even better fuel economy, letting you go 37 miles on the highway* on every single gallon. Drivers who are looking to step into a brand-new car without a hefty price tag that still offers plenty of features should consider the Kia Rio.

How the 2017 Rio Compares to Earlier Models

Compared to previous model years, the 2017 Kia Rio seems more grown up with a leaner appearance. Kia made multiple styling changes to help enhance its width while staying compact. The headlights have gotten more aggressive and slimmer, and the gentle curves in the sheet metal have become flat planes. The materials inside the Rio are also higher-quality, and the infotainment system has changed, becoming "floating." In other words, it extends up the dashboard, even going off of it to some extent, to provide visibility. The 2017 Rio also saw a few adjustments to the paint colors. You still get a familiar 138-horsepower 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine and the other features you know and love along with the overall styling familiar to Rio drivers.

Changes to the Kia Rio throughout its History

The Kia Rio first arrived for the 2001 model year, standing out for its affordability, long warranty, and range of features. It was originally just available as a sedan, but the 2002 Rio added a wagon body style with more than 44 cubic feet for storage for drivers who needed a little extra versatility. The 2003 Rio saw the addition of map lights, child seat anchors, bottle holders, other interior additions, and a new 1.6 liter, 4-cylinder engine. Alloy wheels on the Cinco trim and lumbar support for the driver were added the following year, providing more style and comfort.

The 2006 Rio represented a new redesign and that was when the hatchback arrived, replacing the wagon. There were just minor changes for the following model year, such as a new SX trim level. The LX trim became available on the Rio 5-Door for 2008. Bluetooth** and cruise control arrived for the 2010 model year. There was another major redesign for the 2012 Rio, more closely matching the models you will find as new today. Since then, Kia has continued to improve the Rio's efficiency with stop-start technology, added available paddle shifters, and made other minor adjustments to increase safety, comfort, and style.
