2017 Kia Rio vs 2016 Kia Rio

Serving Shelby, Charlotte, and Kings Mountain

The subcompact has been the go-to model for many economical drivers over the decades, particularly those who can't afford hybrids or electric cars. The reasons are simple -- subcompacts are normally inexpensive while they maintain high fuel efficiency for both city and highway driving. In addition, many of these models offer the same safety and interior features as their bigger siblings for a smaller MSRP. Overall, subcompacts are win-win for drivers of any age, skill set, or economic status.

Thus, the reason why the Kia Rio series of subcompact models comfortably fits into the lists of those looking for such vehicles. The good thing about the Rio for both years is their reliability in interior and exterior features. The better thing is their MSRP. The cost for both the lower-end LX and the higher-end SX has not differed. The only major change between 2016 and 2017 is the removal of the $20,000 SX model. Now, only $3,000 stands between moving from one model to the other.

Performance

Little if anything has changed between the 2016 and 2017 models. Each offers a 1.6 liter, Inline 4 engine which provides 138 horsepower and a maximum of 6300 rpm. While the LX offers a manual transmission, both series models of the Rio come standard with a six-speed automatic transmission with the company's registered Sportamatic option. Mileage-wise, the 2016 Rio series is slightly better on the highway -- 37 mpg vs. the 2017 36 mpg. Both years offer 26 miles per gallon in the city.

Appearance

There are no differences between the exterior appearance of the 2016 and 2017 models of the Kia Rio. Both come standard with a black mesh radiator grille, heated side mirrors, halogen headlights, and solar control glass. On the interior, both the LX and EX models come with air conditioning, tilt wheel steering, and AM/FM/CD with MP3 and ability to subscribe to Sirius XM Radio. The EX series offers upgrades like Bluetooth access, cruise control, keyless remote, and an active Eco system.

Safety

Again, nothing has changed in safety options for the 2016 and 2017 Rio models. This doesn't mean sub-par safety and security. On the contrary, these subcompacts provide a good deal of protection for their low cost. This includes front and side curtain airbags, anti-lock disc brakes, Vehicle Stability Management, side-impact door beams, and front and rear crumple zones. Those with small children can rely on the Rio's lower anchors and tethers for children and rear child-safety door locks.

While it's fine to read the descriptions of both the 2016 and 2017 Kia Rio models it's even better to look at and drive one in person. This is why we invite you to stop by Renaldo Kia for a test drive of one or both models. It may be your next vehicle.
